Blueberry Mint Julep

According to the Derby Museum, Mint Julep became Churchill Down's signature drink in 1938 when it was served in souvenir glasses for 75 cents. Clearly this tradition is a timeless one – last year an estimated 120,000 mint juleps were enjoyed during the Derby! Jazz up this classic with sweet, antioxidant rich blueberries, pour into a chilled julep cup, and let the games begin.

1 cup granulated sugar 250 mL
1 cup water 250 mL
1 cup Southern U.S. blueberries 250 mL
6 oz bourbon 125 g
  crushed ice

Garnish: Mint sprigs, fresh blueberries

Make blueberry syrup: In small saucepan whisk together sugar and water over medium heat just until sugar is dissolved. Add blueberries and cook 1 minute. Remove from heat until completely cooled, about 1 hour.

Assemble drinks: For each drink, fill glass with crushed ice. Add 1-1/2 oz (40 g) bourbon and 2 oz (50 g) of the blueberry syrup. Garnish with fresh berries and mint sprigs.

Makes 4 servings.
